Culturally, we yearn for vicarious realities. Most immediately, this manifests in the desire to witness the lives of others, which are subsequently presented to us as fakes. As soon as a camera appears, everything gears towards the performance of life (moreover, the performance of life in the service of entertainment).
In classes such as we have had this last week, which, through the enactment of silence and spontaneous confessionals, have spotlighted physical and emotional truths, the reality has stimulated the entertainment, and not the opposite.
Such a result has relied entirely on the fearlessness of the participants. To my students come my thanks and respect for your giving natures and your desire to peel off another layer – not of Conrad’s onion, but of the gauze that protects every genuinely wounded core.
