The nut cage

The North 54

Knowing there is plenty of sleep to come
the oldest in the house is always first to wake
up at the crack, best part of the day
all the lights on in the lounge
wheelchair ads on TV
a doze after The Mail
postman’s ten minutes late
something about Russia on the radio
stare at the now-sunny garden through the big window
all the lights on in the lounge
second cup of tea four sugars
double check the lottery numbers
postman comes but gets away immediately
leaving a clutch of 40th birthday cards
back into the big chair
the nut cage on the tree needs filling.
